What makes someone grown?
When I was a little girl, I couldn't wait to be grown. I wanted to just be able to do all of the things my big sister and big cousins were doing. I wanted to be able to get up and go out with my friends when I wanted to, without having to ask for permission. And I wanted to be able to stay up all night talking on the phone with whatever little boy I was entertaining at the time. LOL.
I never took into account what really goes into being grown, and growing up in general.
Because at this point, I take it back! I damn near wanna be a kid again, well maybe not a kid, maybe like 21. Old enough to make my own decisions, but young enough to spend my parents' money on the things I want and need.
Being grown is a lot of work. You have to be responsible and accountable for yourself and your actions, at all times. If you're not, you can run into more than a few problems.
You are grown when YOU are taking care of you.
Your age doesn't make you grown, and it damn sure doesn't make you any more or less mature. To be honest, most of y'all are just "adult children".
So the next time you start hollering about how grown you are, remember my words.
“Until recently each generation found it more expedient to plead guilty to the charge of being young and ignorant, easier to take the punishment meted out by the older generation (which had itself confessed to the same crime short years before). The command to grow up at once was more bearable than the faceless horror of wavering purpose, which was youth.”
